New casinos and sportsbooks to look for in 2010.
The best and some of the worst in online gambling in the year that passed.
Legal Issues Debated
The past year proved to be an eventful and successful year for the online gambling industry in the Philippines even if it did start on a wobbly note. Narciso Santiago of the minority Alliance for Rural Concerns party proposed that internet gambling be made illegal and even introduced a bill into Parliament. Fortunately, Filipino politicians decided in December to continue supporting gambling both online and in land based casinos. So it looks as if the the Philippines, long considered to be a haven for online casinos in the Asia-Pacific region, will hang on to that reputation.
New Casinos and Sportsbooks
New ventures in the Philippines includes the Manila-based Orient Capital Ventures Inc (OCVI) which secured a license from PAGCOR to operate a sportsbook. They chose iBroker from Global Betting Exchange to be its software supporter. OCVI is actually a subsidiary of AsianLogic Limited which is widely regarded as the leading online and land based gaming operator in the Asia Pacific region.
The land based $700 million Resorts World Manila also opened its doors for the first time. This opening represents another step by the Philippines to capitalize on Asia's booming gambling industry.
Early in the year, the Main Event of the Asian Poker Tour Philippines which supported by online poker rooms Titan Poker and PartyPoker was won by Filipino player Neil Acre. After making his way through a competitive field of 262 players, he managed to take home $185,000 in prize money.
All Slots Casino was the highest pay out of all online casinos in 2009 with more than $31 millions in winnings paid out to its players.
What to Expect in 2010
Looking ahead to the New Year we can expect Philweb, the largest Filipino-based online technology firm, to offer foreign government-franchised gaming businesses overseas. This new venture will be operated by its new wholly owned subsidiary, Philweb International Gaming Corp. Their unique business model is based upon a partnership between government and business and thus stands to greatly benefit the Filipino Government.
The comic book themed video slot game, Hellboy, will also shortly be released on 14 January by JackpotCity Casino. This is a 5 reel, 20 payline, and multiple coin game, with a wild and scatters that triggers a 4 Level Bonus Feature.
